Personal: Change of name

There are different ways to change your name. One way is to sign a Change of Name Deed which evidences the change of your name. The deed is useful because you can produce a certified copy of it to your bank and other institutions which need proof of the change.

It is perfectly possible to change your name by simply using a different name but you may well run into difficulty in proving it.

A woman often adopts her husband's surname when she marries. If a woman wishes to revert to her maiden name because of divorce or separation, she does not have to wait until the divorce is finalised before doing so. She can change her surname whenever she wishes.

Parents should not change the name of their children without first having the written consent of the other parent and if the parents are separated it is best to obtain legal advice on the matter. In the event of a disagreement it is open to either party to apply to the Court for a decision as to whether it is in the interest of the child to change their name.
